Ypsi Food Coop += liquor license


Recently, the Ypsi Food Co-op has made some small rearrangement between every time I've been in, seeking ever more efficient utilization of their space. The most recent rearrangement, though, was to accommodate an entirely new category of product.

Yes, boys and girls, my food co-op has a liquor license, and are carrying various local and/or organic beers and wines - at no higher cost than my corner liquor store. Woot. The selection's not huge, but as long as they're carrying Bell's, they're doing one better than Chicago. (Ha ha, Dale. Ha ha.)

Speaking of the co-op, I

Speaking of the co-op, I went there for the first time during the chili tasting this past Saturday. Awesome place! I commented to my husband that "Murph talks about this place all the time on his blog" and the long-suffering husband just looked at me like I was speaking Pict. :)


Hey, what can I say. I'm both an insufferable co-operative fanatic and a total Ypsi booster. Makes for a dangerous combination.

What did y'all think of the chili tasting? I didn't make it, but enjoyed last year's, despite the fact that living with Texans for a few years seems to have made my idea of "chili" a great many Scovilles higher than most Depot Towners'.

Awesome. It was just

Awesome. It was just awesome. By the end, I really thought I was going to, uh, explode. I loved the bakery's chili the best, while Jeff liked the spicier stuff. I also liked Sidetracks chili...and the cute little shotglasses of beer. Soooo cute and sooo good.

We need more Ypsi boosters, my friend. Though I live in A2, I am always trying to talk up Ypsi, but I shouldn't have to because people should just "know" it (if that makes sense). Don't even get me started on the "Oooooh, I can't cross Carpenter Road" A2 people. My blood pressure just jumped up thinking about them f*******s.


Esther bought the Cook's

Esther bought the Cook's Illustrated Soups & Stews issue, and we spent a while chuckling over their chili article. TWO TBSPS of ground roasted chiles?! When we made vegan chili for our garden here in Boston and halved the spices, producing something that most everyone there said was right up near the top of what they could handle, we used THREE.

Then there are the questions about how much liquid there should be, whether the beef should be chunked or ground, and all the rest. That's the problem with reading an article about a recipe you know in your bones--it seems wrong and ignorant to you, even though it might not be, and it makes you suspicious of the rest of the contents. Granted, I'm halfway through making the braised short ribs they describe, so we'll have another data point soon.

Cook's Illustrated

I can't read Cook's Illustrated. I find myself being annoyed by the times I feel they're doing the above, especially because, in the process of doing so, they make very clear that the way /you/ do it is wrong and ignorant, and they're here to set you straight and show you how to do it right, you poor thing.

The editor is a little

The editor is a little paternalistic...I try to ignore that, because I have gotten some awesome recipes from them.
But the editor's cheesy "my life is perfect on the farm and anyone who doesn't live on a farm is just so pitiful" articles drive me nuts. I fuss about them for a bit after I read them, yet I keep reading them cuz, hey, I like fussing!

I may have only read one

I may have only read one issue of the magazine? I base most of my opinion of Cooks Illustrated on their "The New Best Recipe" and "The International Best Recipe" cookbooks, and, within those, on looking up recipes for things I feel like I know how to make. Which irritates me, and makes me turn to cookbooks I trust and know how to modify to get what I want without cutting through the sneering and condescension - primarily those from Laurel's kitchen and Deborah Madison...
