I have the feeling I'll be getting good at this
My project for this wonderful spring morning is repainting a windowsill.
Um, hrmm. Did I say "repaint"? Sorry, I apparently mean "replace". Crap.
Actually, it's not so bad. I've mentioned before that my house has four layers of siding stacked onto it. At some point, this meant the windowsills needed to be extended to stick out past the siding. So the bit in need of replacement is a 2x2 sill extender that was rather poorly grafted onto the existing sill. (Judging by the face of the old sill, my house at one point had green trim instead of white.) I suppose that, if I wanted to do this right/best, I'd take out the piece underneath and put in one single sill, so that I don't have to go through my current process all over again in a few years.
OTOH, my master plan involves replacing this window in a few years anyways, so I think that today I'm going to not go through the rigmarole of extracting the entire sill. (Said "plans" involve replacing the lousy wallside window with a french-door style window opening onto a second story deck / growing platform atop the front/south porch, if you must know...Phase 2 is to enclose this deck as a second story greenhouse, but I know only too well the variance hell I'll have to go through.)
Chemistry is wonderful.
Oh, right. Pouring wood hardener into a plastic cup in order to brush it onto old wood is not a great idea. You end up with a plastic cup with no bottom, and a much abbreviated application process that involves dribbling ketone slurry out the bottom of the cup and brushing it around really fast. Yum.
In other window related repairs, I've fixed two screens in my breaks from the sill project. Yay productivity.
If it's any consolation, I
If it's any consolation, I spent the day hacking a new path through the woods along the north side of our garden. Or rather, overseeing a work crew of ten people who hacked the path while I uprooted blackberry canes and ran around checking on other projects around the garden.
The plus, though, is that now we have to get a pick axe to help dig up the stumps in the path. I love having an excuse to buy a pick axe.
sunday gardening
Sunday was a work day for our new community garden. Which involved, among other things, loading logs into a truck offsite to bring in. Said logs were about 10-12 feet long and 2 feet in diameter - those suckers were *heavy*. Also did some brush hauling and fence building, and am now quite sore and slightly sunburnt. But it's pretty awesome to see this project have gone from 3 of us with only the slightest concept of wanting a garden to having 20-25 people out for several hours working on it.
Patience...
Our camera's memory card is full, and I can't find the cable, so I didn't take any pictures on the workday. I'll try to remedy that next time.
